Album notes
There are so many fine pianists in the world that a few inevitably get lost in the shuffle. One such is Hal Schaefer--he played in Swing Era big bands (Tommy Dorsey, Harry James), accompanied singers (Peggy Lee, Billy Eckstine), arranged and composed film soundtracks, and coached actresses on singing in films as well (Marilyn Monroe). Schaefer is still at it, re-inventing Great American Songbook standards in a loving and imaginative manner. His bright, relaxed, lyrical style evokes pre-bebop piano masters like Duke Ellington and Teddy Wilson as well as bop-infleunced wizards such as Oscar Peterson.
