On the second track of BACK TO BASICS, Beenie Man declares himself the "King of the Dancehall." For anyone questioning that claim, this album, a full-on dancehall explosion, reminds one and all why the man born Moses Davis has been a legend since well before his teens. The record opens with the grooved-out bang of the lead single, "Dude," featuring the sultry rap of Miss Thing and made for massive summer radio play while staying completely true to its dancehall roots.
As usual, the lyrics tend to wind from the dance floor to the bedroom, as the booming "All Girls Party" and the imperial "Grindacologist" push new limits on double-entendre, the latter augmented by an unearthly New Wave-style keyboard riff and a disarming distaff military march. Beenie Man's mind does wander into other topics, most effectively on the dancehall-meets-gospel of "If a Neva God," which shifts from pulsating beats to inspirational reggae and back with impressive ease. BACK TO BASICS describes the record perfectly, as Beenie Man embraces the music that made him a star, dropping one whirlwind of a sweltering dance record.
