TV World (TV Times Midlands) Feb 27 - Mar 5

Travel back to 1965 when on air TV was in its heyday and the weekly top picks created the same excitement as today’s blockbuster movies. Television was still in its black and white era with colour unlikely until the end of the decade and even then only for the major markets. So to get your dose of colour you would turn not to the monochrome of Fleet Street. Instead, you turned to the must-have listings magazines. And none better than TV World with its two colour covers, one on the front for the overall magazine and one in the centre for weekdays.

Crossroads fans would have been intrigued to learn of Meg Richardson’s new gentleman friend, Hugh Mortimer. See the collection of pictures and article on pages 4-5 including Noele Gordon, John Bentley, Peggy Aitchison and Sue Nicholls. More about life at the motel on page 15 where Peter Green meets Graham Rigby who played Dick Jarvis’s brother. Soap fans also find out about Pat Phoenix’s (Elsie Tanner in Coronation Street) holiday plans when she meets editor Peter Green.

The centre page weekday cover has a colour pic of Kathleen Breck and Ann Lynn who were to appear in Danger Man. Go to page 17 as well for some great colour pics of those appearing on this week’s Thank your Lucky Stars. Wow!! Roy Orbison (see the article Orbiting with Orbison), Dusty Springfield and the Searchers are all pictured in postcard size colour pics. Also, check out the passport size photo and article on page 3 about a gentleman who had the “makings of a heart throb.” Simon Dee, known for his voice not his face at this time, was another guest on Lucky Stars. As if that is not enough, on page 16 there is a pic and article on jazz maestro Ben Webster. Talking of jazz, Acker Bilk is pictured on page 3 and the article looks forward to his appearance on Big Night Out. Petula Clark was to appear on Sunday Night at the London Palladium. See the article about her family life in France on page 20. It tells how much her flat in Paris cost in those days,

In this edition of TV World the TV Times for the midlands, the front cover has Charlie Drake and on pages 40-41 he is the Top Star Talking with more pictures. For insight into this week’s episode go to page 21. He tells honestly why he is not the type to be around when he has a television project. In the mid to late sixties, he was on one of ITV’s very few memorable comedy series over its fifty years. In fact, ITV never seemed able to come up with comedy classics in the same way as the BBC. The Worker broke the mould. The writing was really clever. “I went down the garden to get some mint to put on my boiled egg” the unemployed Charlie once said to the long suffering employment office clerk.

Dr Who lovers will enjoy the short article on the Pertwees. Bill Pertwee was to appear on Night Spot. See page 21. Jon Pertwee was his cousin but other family members were well known. Also, go to page 26 to meet comedian Charlie Chester. He was in Stars and Garters but how many knew of his artistic talents?

Drake later went on to make a series of sketch shows, The Charlie Drake Show in colour for BBC2 where his brilliance was recognized in the form of the Golden Rose of Montreux. The most acclaimed sketch was of an orchestra in which Drake appeared to play all the instruments while conducting. Throughout there were shots of him as an avid triangle player, counting down to the big moment when he would strike the instrument, only to miss his cue. It was excellent visual humour for the European audience and demonstrated that his comic brilliance extended from brash to classic subtlety.

ABC’s The Human Jungle starred Hubert Lom. The series titles and theme can be accessed on youtube but getting copies of the series will remain a challenge until someone releases them on DVD. The second programme in the second series Success Machine starred Edward Judd and Sylvia Syms (pictured) was actually the first in the second series shown in the USA the previous September. The programme followed Public Eye (see the article on page 8 with pics of guests and star Alfred Burke as Marker) on Saturday night. These were two well crafted intelligent programmes, each of them ahead of its time and a look at this Saturday night will show you what British TV looked like at its best.

Condition: Almost mint. Some browning.
