Item specifics
Condition: New

You are invited to bid on this solid brass Braine-type steering quadrant that is suitable for model yachts and pond sailboats with hulls in the 36" to 72" range.  This is our model #511-3 which measures approximately 3" X 3.150".   This fitting, our model #511-3 and  the slightly smaller #511-2 version, feature a roller for an elastic centering line and are made with all new CNC tooling.  They  ave been very well received by customers around the world.   All our units are crafted from  solid brass with a standard bushing bored for a 3/16 inch rudder shaft (common on Marblehead class boats) and are threaded for a set screw or through screw.  Each quadrant includes a stainless steel socket head set screw, Allen wrench, 4 phosphor bronze sheet hooks, and basic installation instructions.  Quadrants for rudder shafts from 1/8" to 5/16" are available on special order.  Our catalog offers elastic centering line, a line anchor fitting, and an adjustable tackle kit to complete your Braine steering system - or we will be glad to send instructions to help you create your own centering tackle.   The 5th photo above shows a typical model yacht deck layout for Braine steering gear, but remember, this auction is for the steering quadrant, hooks and mounting hardware ONLY.

We will be glad to forward a copy of our fittings catalog - simply send your direct email address to us at    Appreciating.Antiques@gmail.com

Braine steering gear was invented in 1904 by George Braine, a revered member of London’s Kensington Gardens Model Yacht Sailing Association.  This simple but effective self-steering system was used very extensively on both competition and recreational model yachts.  Braine steering quadrants are mounted to the rudder shaft and connected by sheet hooks and lines to either the main boom or the jib club boom.

Please send questions before you bid.  We reserve the right to refuse bids from those with limited or negative feedback.  Shipping in the US is a flat $5.00. Overseas customers please email for shipping costs.

In response to owners of  Jacrim, Seaworthy, Keystone and other Chester Rimmer designed boats. This quadrant is too large for those boats, but we do offer bowsers, deck eye pads, sheet hooks, tiller coils, replacement masts and booms, etc. that were developed specifically for restoring your boats; please email  for our catalog.  Also note: If you are one of the collectors who sent emails asking about Braine gear for boats with raked (angled) rudders, we now have a unit available that will work with your boat.  Please email us for details.

Thanks for your time.
