The Vowel Sound Game (VSG) was written to improve an individual’s ability to read by improving one’s phonemic awareness. This refers to; recognizing, discriminating, and manipulating individual sounds in one’s language. This awareness is a precursor to literacy. The activities were designed to demand attention to spoken language both phonemically and semantically, to promote comprehension, the segmentary nature of spoken words, and vowel discrimination.
The Vowel Sound Game is also beneficial for the promotion of: vocabulary, auditory processing, comprehension of “wh” questions, turn taking, speech disorders such as vowel distortions or accent reduction and, word finding difficulty. Students with hearing impairments may also benefit. The VSG is a good tool to use in a one on one setting or with a diverse group.
The VSG is basically a trivia game, structured to elicit specific vowel sounds in words. First the students listen to the teacher/therapist read a list of words containing the targeted vowel to bombard their auditory system. Next clues are presented i.e., “All the answers contain the short /a/ sound” and, a visual picture of the lower case vowel being targeted. This requires the students to concentrate on the targeted vowel and articulate the sound in the answer. By drawing attention to individual vowel sounds repeatedly increases the awareness and comprehension of the subtle differences between them. This awareness helps with discriminating between vowels while decoding or reading.
The game format helps engage and extend the attention of young children. The questions can be used in many different ways:
* Divide the group into teams and the team that answers correctly first earns a point.
* Present a question that must be answered correctly before a turn is taken on a game board.
* Have an individual student beat the clock by timing the responses. I am a speech and language therapist, and have written several workbooks over the years. I hope the use of them will help those with delays progress quickly. This booklet is in a word document that can be attached to an email. No shipping! There are 29 pages in all. Thanks for looking.
