    ORIGINAL ANTIQUE TOY BOOK, Published in Boston by L. Prang & Co., (1863), First Edition Die-cut chromolithographs published during the Civil War!!  

Complete in 16 pages, original hinged binder in tact with just a touch of rubbing, Colors Brilliant on the pictorial card wrappers; approximately 6.75 x 2.5 inches.  Only mark is  ownership signature to verso of front wrapper. colors Even & Crisp.

    Excellent Example or what many believe is the First Ever American "shape book", with the paper stock cut in the shape of Red Riding Hood.

    This version of the popular children story is written in verse and was modified slightly by Lydia L. Very in that the grandmother is absent from home when the wolf calls, and it has a more instructive moral message (perils of disobedience!).

     L. Prang & Company issued this Title as the FIRST in a series of "Doll" books in 1863 which, along with other juveniles, toy books, and games were among its first publications.
