Meade NG70-SM Refractor Scope Description

Personal Note:

A 2.8 inch (70mm) refractor is classic grab and go scope and an excellent entry level telescope. While not the biggest scope, a scope of this size will really open ones eyes to the universe. A 70mm lens collects more light than classic beginner 60mm refractor telescope. Given that the main function of an astronomical telescope is to gather light, selling scopes based on how much a scope can magnify is a fairly meaningless statement. The magnification can be changed by just using a shorter focal length eyepiece (i.e. The focal length of this scope is 700mm. If you use a 10mm eyepiece, the magnification will be 700/10=70x). The larger the objective lens the more light the scope collects. Plus the maximum magnification per inch is 50x (so a 2.8 inch scope will go as high as 140x).

What can you see with a 2.8 inch scope?

Solar system

• Jupiter will reveal not just its two main equatorial belts, plus its four moons and shadow transits
• Saturn will reveal its glorious ring system and its largest moon Titan
• Venus and Mercury will reveal crescent phases
• Mars will display its polar ice caps and perhaps some dust markings during favourable oppositions
• The moon will reveal craters within craters

Deep sky (objects outside our solar system)

• Emission nebulae:
  • M42, The Orion Nebula (seen as a greenish patch of light, not unlike an opening flower!!!)
  • M8, The Lagoon Nebula (seen as two misty patches of light with a dark river running through it)
  • M17, The Swan Nebula (seen as a misty checkmark not unlike the famous NIKE symbol)
• Open clusters such as M45, The Pleiades "Seven Sisters" star cluster
• Globular clusters:
  • M15, the great Hercules globular (a glorious celestial cotton ball)
  • M22, the crackerjack cluster (see as a bright cotton ball)
  • M5, the Serpen's globular (similar as M22)
• Galaxies:
  • M31, The Andromeda Galaxy boldly showing its gray visage under dark pristine skies
  • M81/M82 galaxy pair in Ursa Major

Note that all objects will appear greyish and not colored like the Hubble pictures. Our eyes are not sensitive enough to perceive color under low light conditions.

Return & Warranty

Our return policy is as follows: all sales are final unless the item is not as described. All items refused will be credit less 15% restock and a shipping charge, no exceptions. Our supplier does not accept any returns for media (ie CDs, DVDs, Books, Software) unless it was a supplier mis-shipment and the product is unopened. All returns are for refund only. Replacement product must be ordered again as a new order with a new order number and will include freight and handling charges.
