Album notes
DO YOU EVER THINK OF ME is a nicely packaged reissue of 1960s folk-rock legend Fred Neil's two albums for Capitol Records, 1966's FRED NEIL and 1967's SESSIONS. FRED NEIL was a more pop-oriented work than Neil's strictly acoustic 1965 debut, with producer Nik Venet adding a fuller, electrified folk-rock sound. It contains his two most famous songs, "The Dolphins" and "Everybody's Talkin'," the latter of which Harry Nilsson turned into a worldwide hit in 1969. The altogether different SESSIONS, true to its title, consists of seven live-in-the-studio jams, complete with lengthy acid-raga soloing and unedited studio-floor banter. The combination of the brightly polished folk-pop classic and its woozy, stoned-sounding follow-up neatly encapsulates both sides of Fred Neil's stormy, idiosyncratic musical personality.
Editorial reviews
4 stars out of 5 - ...This is a welcome primer of some of Neil's best work... Mojo (09/01/2003)
3 stars out of 5 - ...Recalling a baritone Tim Buckley at his bluesiest... Q (12/01/2003)
4 stars out of 5 -- In the 70s he withdrew from a music business that he didn't respect, but has left us with superb material like this. Quite simply, everybody ought to own this, especially any Dylan fan. Record Collector
