Album notes
Twenty-first century pop culture moves so quickly that yesterday's schlock is today's nostalgia, and even parodies can be successfully parodied in a frenzy of insular cross-referencing. Such is the environment that spawned SCARY MOVIE, a satire of movies such as SCREAM, themselves already satires of cheesy horror movies. Thankfully, the more unctuous extremes of American pop circa 2000 (boybands, rap-metal) are avoided in favor of straight-up rock and hip-hop. The former is well represented by the tongue-in-cheek Fountains of Wayne ("Too Cool for School"), and the immensely hooky Radford ("Stay"). There's even a bow to rock's past in the inclusion of The Ramones' classic punk ode to sensory overload, "I Wanna Be Sedated." On the rap side of things, there's the eminently funky, low key "I Want You" by Black Eyed Peas, and old masters Public Enemy, whose "What What" eschews the hard-hitting political themes for which the group is known in favor of a celebratory party anthem.
