Vintage R&B collectors will salivate at the first digital release of these rare sides by West coast soul singer Harry "Little" Caesar. YOUR ON-THE-HOUR MAN contains pretty much everything he recorded for the Modern, Dolphin, and Downey labels between 1952 and 1960. Caesar's tunes were full of pathos, and on cuts like the eerie, near-suicidal plaint "River," he comes across like a lo-fi Roy Orbison of soul, dripping with broken-hearted drama. Astonishingly, this is the first collection of his music to see an officially sanctioned CD release.
Editorial reviews
4 stars out of 5 -- Caesar, who wrote many songs himself, effectively tackles doo wop on 'Atomic Love' and the glorious 'When I Return,' jump blues on 'Tick Tock Awoo' and is strangely atmospheric on 'The Ghost Of Mary Meade'... Record Collector
