1995's A LITTLE PRINCESS is an engaging adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic tale of a girl who's sent to a boarding school in New York when her father must serve in World War I. The young girl learns that, despite the treatment she receives from a strict headmistress, she'll always be a princess.
Directed by John Hughes (THE BREAKFAST CLUB, SIXTEEN CANDLES), CURLY SUE stars Alisan Porter as Curly Sue, a street-savvy rascal with tricks up her sleeve. Though she's only a child, Sue, along with her homeless father, Bill Dancer (Jim Belushi), can scam with the best of them. When they pull a fast one on Grey Ellison (Kelly Lynch), a high-powered corporate attorney, they are unprepared for what comes next. Planning only to take advantage of Grey's generosity, they never expect that the three of them will become an actual family.
1993's THE SECRET GARDEN is Agnieszka Holland's colorful adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic fairy tale. Ten-year-old Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly) lives with her rich, distant parents in India until a tragic accident kills them, and she is shipped off to live with family friends in England. Though the living environment in Mary's new home is no warmer than her former one, she and a crippled young boy manage to find happiness in a magical garden which has been kept hidden for years. Beautifully shot by Roger Deakins, Holland's film is a visual feast that captures the fantasy like tone of the book without sacrificing any of Burnett's original vision.
