Album notes
Personnel: Louis Smith (trumpet); Cannonball Adderley (alto saxophone); Duke Jordan, Tommy Flanagan (piano); Doug Watkins (bass); Art Taylor (drums). Personnel: Louis Smith (trumpet); Cannonball Adderley (alto saxophone); Duke Jordan, Tommy Flanagan (piano); Doug Watkins (upright bass); Art Taylor (drums). Trumpeter Louis Smith was an exciting up-and-coming hard bop player in the 1950's, released two excellent discs on Blue Note, but then went into teaching. (He re-emerged in 1978, recording for Steeplechase Records.) HERE COMES. is, naturally, his debut, and he was accompanied by what turned out to be jazz royalty: Cannonball Adderely, known here as Buckshot La Funke (due to contractual obligations), alto sax; Tommy Flanagan and Duke Jordan alternated on piano, and Art Taylor and Doug Watkins headed up the rhythm section. Smith is firmly in the continuum of bop brass-masters Clifford Brown and Fats Navarro, and most of HERE is his originals.
