Contrary to his mythological status as a populist, Wild West Robin Hood, cowboy outlaw Jesse James was, in fact, a ruthless criminal and former Confederate guerilla whose much-heralded banditry was an attempt to avenge the South's loss in the Civil War. Narrated by actor Michael Murphy, this episode of PBS's AMERICAN EXPERIENCE separates the facts and fictions of James's life and exploits through archival material, dramatic re-creations, and interviews with historians and scholars.
