This works just like a regular Heat Pump System except when the outdoor temp get to preset temp usally around 30 -32 degrees instead of the outdoot unit calling for the indoor air handler to turn on the heat strips which cost $$$ to run it simply calls for the gas furnace to come on instead.
Plus it a a much warmer heat.
