Stella's sexual odyssey is launched from the apartment of wealthy Teo (Dylan Walsh). Teo's alcoholism diminishes his sexual drive and leads Stella to prowl the streets in search of one night stands to experience the various sexual tastes and flavours of men.

She leaves New York for Los Angeles where she lands a job as a chef in a trendy restaurant owned by miserably-married George (John Heard). Their closeness in the kitchen and mutual love of cooking soon blossom into an affair...until Frank (Richard Hillman) shows up. A photographer with a social conscience, Frank pursues his own dream to win a Pulitzer Prize for his "combat" photo journalism of gang warfare in South Central Los Angeles. Their affair begins as lust but grows into much more and they explore life experiences together. For the first time, Stella experiences jealousy.

Tragedy strikes a few blissful days later when Frank is shot and fatally wounded while he photographs a robber in progress. Stella is devastated, but her fierce independent strength pulls her through. She makes it as a top chef. But she now knows what before she could only wonder about: great sex is but one element of true love.
