Recorded at Shelter Island Studios, New York, New York; Third Story Recording, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and live at BBC Pebble Mill, England. Donna Lewis is a vocalist/keyboardist/composer who combines electronics and modern production techniques with a '60s Goffin/King compositional sensibility. Her musical vision arrives fully-realized on her debut album, on which she uses soft, textural layers of keyboards to clothe her direct, unpretentious lyrics. Most of Lewis' songs focus on that perennial pop subject, love and the lack thereof. They are delivered in a small, fragile voice that simultaneously recalls the self-possessed eccentricity of Tori Amos and the wispy waifishness of Jewel. While Lewis composes much more straightforward pop confections than either Amos or Jewel, she is capable of creating an airy, atmospheric landscape with synthesizers and drum machines, and it provides a perfect foil for her old-style songwriting. NOW IN A MINUTE maintains this approach throughout; Lewis is a musician who knows exactly what she wants to do and has the ability to traverse an album's worth of tunes without once breaking stride. Personnel: Donna Lewis (vocals, piano, omnichord, keyboards, programming, music box); Gerry Leonard (guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, classical guitar, E-bow); Bill Dillon (guitar); Erik Friedlander (cello); Harvey Jones (Mellotron, keyboards, synthesizer); Mark Hutchins (Mellotron, keyboards, percussion); Kevin Killen (omnichord); Jimmy Bralower, Dean Sharp (drums, drum programming); Peter Keppler (music box). Unknown Contributor Roles: Mark Hutchins; Harvey Jones. Arranger: Donna Lewis. Classically trained, ex-music teacher Donna Lewis made a major impact in the pop world with her 1996 hit "I Love You Always Forever." The track, from the Welsh singer's debut release Now in a Minute, was inspired by an H.E. Bates novel and spent over two months at number two on the American charts. There's nothing else nearly as compelling on the album, although there is a handful of other solid tracks like the hypnotic "Nothing Ever Changes" and the dreamy "Simone." Lewis has a girlish voice that sounds like a less quirky Kate Bush. The music, played by studio musicians and produced by Lewis with Kevin Killen, has a high-sheen, glossy feel that contradicts the somewhat personal nature of the lyrics. The one song that escapes the overproduction is the lovely piano ballad "Silent World," which closes the record and hints what might have been. ~ Tom Demalon | |
