1955 Chris Craft Cobra

The Chris Craft logo is associated with both superior speed and craftsmanship. Founded by Christopher Columbus Smith around the 1920s, Chris Craft Co. still stands as a leader in producing high-powered, luxurious leisure boats. These pleasingly varnished, mahogany masterpieces are well known and easily identified by antique boat enthusiasts.

The success of the Christ Craft vessels was perpetuated by Smith's flourishing racing career. The quality of his models was tested through competitive speedboat racing, and the Christ Craft superiority rang true as the boats consistently proved victorious.

During the era of prohibition, speedboat racing was embraced by gamblers, industrialists, and mobsters. These men readily financed the high-powered designs of craftsman such as Christopher Columbus Smith, John L. Hacker, and George Crouch.

As Smith's boats started to receive awards such as the coveted Gold Cup of the American Power Boat Association, the Chris Craft name started to become a star among nautical enthusiasts. He continued to thrive in the speedboat competitions and his string of victories further accelerated the explosion of his company's success.

Only 80 of the original 108 Chris Craft Cobras have been rediscovered since their manufacturing in 1955. During a time of booming demand for luxury and industrial experimentation, boat manufacturers were pressured to be innovative in the creation of their vehicles.

The 1955 Cobra is fashioned out of not only the traditional double-planked mahogany, but sports a fiber-glass fin. While initially this unique look and feel attracted buyers, the Chris Craft Cobra received an overall unenthusiastic response and production was discontinued after a year.

Model Specification

Overall dimensions 35" long x 10" Wide x 7" High (1:10 scale)

To provide classic boat hobbiest an opportunity to enjoy the boat more than just its beauties, H2O Hobbies has put in many years of research and development to build an RC-ready model. The process of building is truly replicating the actual boats.

To ensure reliability, H2O Hobbies has designed and built a layer of fiberglass between the frame and outside planks to protect against water damage and provide additional strength. Without the fiberglass, the boat is definitely susceptible to water damage resulting in plank separation.

Extensive research is required to build each boat model according to scale, using various pictures, original plans, drawings, and digital imaging.

Each wooden model ship is examined during various processes of manufacturing and shipment to ensure the highest quality and accuracy possible for your investment.

The Speedboat model is built from scratch by experienced master artisans and is not from any sort of kit. To create the subtle details and definitions of the deck and hull, the plank on frame method of construction is used, which requires hundreds of hours of pain-staking, detailed work.

The highest quality, rare woods (including Ebony, Rosewood, Blackwood, Mahogany, Jack wood, and Sycamore) used to construct our models are subjected to specific seasoning procedures to ensure that the model will withstand severe climate and never warp or split.

The quality Honduras mahogany and fine cherry wood are of the highest caliber and generally used for real boats are used on our wooden boat models.

Our model speed boats are highly polished to a glossy smoothness along with meticulous details that match the perfection of the real thing. Numerous layers of paint and varnish are painstakingly applied, with each layer dried and smoothed through sanding before application of the next.

Details such as fittings, trimmings, steering wheels, and propellers are made sculpted brass or stainless steel. These metal pieces are then polished for perfect gold and metallic tones.

The wooden Speed boat's dashboard is complete with a realistic metal steering wheel, switches, and gauges, all made from polished metals. Plush Seats are hand-stitched and genuine leather.

Extensive research is required to build each boat model according to scale, using various pictures, original plans, drawings, and digital imaging.

Each wooden model ship is examined during various processes of manufacturing and shipment to ensure the highest quality and accuracy possible for your investment.
