Synopsis
Harry Pendel keeps his past a secret from everyone including his wife. He offers in its stead an alternate version, which he has carefully constructed. But everything changes when British agent Andrew Osnard barges into his shop one Friday brandishing the truth like a weapon. Osnard is willing to keep Harry's secret as long as Harry agrees to do a little intelligence gathering for him. Desperate to retain his identity, Harry accepts the assignment, but he's so eager to please that he will do anything to tell his bosses what they want to hear.

Publisher's Note
Bestselling author John le Carre--creator of the highly acclaimed George Smiley novels--has once again effortlessly expanded the borders of the spy novel to bring readers an exuberant, tense, heartbreaking, and provoking entertainment straight out of the pages of tomorrow's history.

Industry reviews
"...Riotous readable novel...a worthy successor to Graham Greene's most wicked entertainments."
New York Times - Michiko Kakutani

"...With `The Tailor of Panama," le Carre has cut another masterpiece from the same bolt from whence came such classics as `The Spy Who Came In From The Cold," "The Looking Glass War," "The Little Drummer Girl," and "The Russia House."
Los Angeles Times Book Review - David McCumber (10/20/1996)

"Harry represents something like the converse worry: the possibility of the terminal invasion of the material world by rampant fictions...le Carre evokes as no one else can the eerie territory in which truth and lies cross over and sometimes cross back again."
Times Literary Supplement - Michael Wood (11/28/1996)

"This highly provocative and dare one say, exquisitely tailored narrative is sped on its way by snatches of slang, odd uses of the vernacular and what can only be described as literary short-cuts: in a roadside, Osnard simply orders two glasses of aircraft fuel. The book also contains monologues or reveries of spell-binding perfection....This level of observation gives the book its strength, humour and profundity."
Spectator - Andrew Barrow (10/19/1996)

"Le Carre goes back to the spy story's roots--'Our Man in Havana', with a touch of Conrad's 'Secret Agent'--to amuse frazzled millenialists with the refreshing news that we've all been here many times before."
Piercy

"A work of rare brilliance...a book about legends and lies, about great loves and little betrayals, about the myth of truth and the consequences of deception."
Kakutani

"By turns comic and tragic, this is the kind of reading experience we have come to expect from le Carre....Surely nobody writes this kind of novel better than le Carre, not even the late Graham Greene, whose 'Our Man in Havana' (1958) was the inspiration for this novel. For all collections."
Annotation copyright H.W. Wilson Company.
Library Journal - Charles Michaud (10/15/1996)

"Getting used to Mr. le Carre doing satire means getting used to sketchier description and scene setting. I found the American characters rather shakily delineated, which might be set down to Mr. le Carre's famous ambivalence toward Americanity....But a more substantial defect for me lies in an aspect of the Pendel character: here we have, however little Mr. le Carre intended it, yet another literary avatar of Judas. It's reasonable to make an expatriate British tailor a Jew, but does this Jew, for example, have to defame the only decent, 'saintly' (Pendel's own term) political leader in Panama, and then go on to implicate his own wife's utterly innocent Christian study group to boot?...[However], John le Carre's writerly skills are at work in 'The Tailor of Panama.' The pace is nonstop, scenes are cleanly and economically written, and flashbacks are incorporated seamlessly into the narrative. The details of the tailor's craft are given entertainingly. And the conclusion, which should probably not come as a surprise, resoundingly does."
Annotation copyright H.W. Wilson Company.
New York Times Book Review - Norman Rush (10/20/1996)
