History of the Church in Carpathian Rus'  1992  ..  Athanasius B. Pekar, OSBM, Translated by Marta Skorupsky, Bio-bibliography by Edward Kasinec and Richard Renoff.

Eastern European Monographs, Distributed by Columbia University Press, NY

This volume is a revised and updated translation of the original Ukrainian-language version that appeard under the title, Narysy istoriji cerkvy Zakarpattja, Vol. I: jerarchicne oformlennja, and was published by the Basilian Fathers, Rome, 1967.

First published in Ukrainian in Rome 1967.  This is the only modern summary of the resgestae of this institution.  The author's desire to make better known the history of both his own people and that of the monastic order of which he is a member.  No complete History of the Carpatho-Rusyn Greek Catholic Church in Europe or America has appeared in the English language, until now.  This volume is a comprenhensive history of the Greek Catholic Hierarchy and its relations w / ecclesiastical and secular leaders.  Pekar's work, focuses mostly on the activities of ecclesiastical and government officals, treats the Carpatho-Rusyns as an oppressed people continually resisting domineering magyar bishops and magnates. He said, "My  purpose is to enable the reader to obtain a true picture of the church and of religious life in th Silverland, even if only in general terms."  "It is my hope, that this work will fill, at least in part, a serious lacuna in Carpatho-Rusyn church historiography."  This is not a complete history of the church in the region know as the silverland, but rather a history of the development of the church's organizational structure.  The struggles of there people and the  universality of the Catholic Church.
