Antique Mirror Work Skirt from Gujarat, India with Hand Embroidery This is a totally amazing vintage skirt which shows hundreds of mirrors and hand embroidery. Photos 1 through 8 show the outside of the skirt. Photos 9 through 12 show the skirt inside out, almost more beautiful than the outside. The mirrors don't show up all that well in the photos. However, every inch of fabric is covered with mirrors and hand embroidery. The waist measures 34 inches (adjustable because there is no specific closure). The Length from the waist band to the hem is 38 inches. The circumference around the hemline is 92 inches of glorious hand work. The Waist Band is 2 1/2 inches wide. This skirt is in great condition. The only flaw which I could find is some staining on the solid blue fabric just below the waist band (see photo 6). You will find attention to detail throughout this garment. For example: photo 11 shows the solid blue, not embroidered, section of the skirt just below the waistband. When you turn this area over to the back side, you will find hand painted figures...these would never be seen when the skirt is worn; but the artist embellished the back side as well. This skirt could easily be worn for a special occasion; or adapted as a decorative/historic display piece in your home. The skirt is very heavy, weighs somewhere around 3 pounds plus. Photo #12 shows the provenance of the skirt on the back of an envelope! This is a very detailed and intricate work of art and in case I have not given enough information, I hope that you will feel free to ask any specific questions by email. |
