We believe this to be the first edition of Carl Burger's All About Dogs, part of Random House's "all about" book series for juvenile (though not extremely young) audiences. It's dated 1962 on the copyright page and we don't see any earlier versions listed at the various online bookseller sites.
Measuring 9.5 x 7 inches, this 144-page book is packed with drawings by the author, a well-known illustrator of the day, as well as photographs. It's rare to see a page without one or the other. The cover is adorned with a photo of two alert-looking beagles against a yellow background; the back cover shows an Airedale in profile against red. There is no dust jacket.
The book contains 10 chapters covering the history of the dog, the breeds and the canine's place at the human hearth (one chapter is titled "Do dogs think?"). According to a notation on the spine, this is No. 42 in the publisher's "all about" series. Other titles cover subjects in space science, earth science, physiology and medicine, music and history.
The book is in very good condition except for some signs of wear, consistent with use, on the cover boards. There is light rubbing on the image of the beagles. The corners of the boards are slightly bent and there is chipping at the top and bottom of the spine. The back cover shows quite a bit of rubbing and even a scrape mark in the top portion of the image (fortunately, it's well above the dog's head; the picture of the Airedale itself shows only minor signs of wear).
Inside, the pages themselves are tight and clean, with no pencil or other marks. There is a small, inked inspection stamp ("Inspector 505") on the inside back cover, in the black portion of a photo of four borzois or Russian wolfhounds.
