This has got to be one of the most interesting fascinating books on early medicine that you'll read. It has so many different types of information, including:
1-"QUALITIES OF A GOOD NURSE- She needs to be healthy, clean, strong, pleasant, tactful, obedient, cheerful, and in love with her work. She should not be given to gossip and should have a great big heart filled with good things. She needs to know enough to follow the doctor's directions..."
2-Section on infectious diseases--amazing when this was written just before the 1918 flu pandemic
3-"Care of Body after Death...Not many people have been buried alive but some have been, so keep your friends till death is certain."
4- It has a section for diseases of almost each system: heart, lungs, nerves (quite humerous), stomach, skin, men, women, etc.
5- Also includes extensive herb dept, poisons & antedotes, animal medicine, gyn, mom & baby, cookbook & domestic sciences, etc.
Please understand that the leather cover reads, "The People's Home Library" and the medical book part is probably the most extensive, but there is a section on domestic arts, and quite a bit on animal health/care too. This book is very fun to look through but it's in VERY VERY bad shape. The spine has come off, pages are worn and out of order, some are torn, and no doubt some are missing. This book is for the pure enjoyment of looking back into the culture of only 100 years ago and browsing--it would be disappointing to someone who wants a perfect looking book to save on a shelf somewhere. It's amazing to see how far we've come in less than 100 years. It's pretty thick at about 3.5 inches thick.
