Like its immediate predecessor, 1991's A REAL LIFE STORY, 1992's BLUE IS THE COLOUR OF HOPE downplays Irish interpretive singer Maura O'Connell's roots in Celtic folk in favor of a more American, almost Nashville-ready sound. The result is not at all unlike the later work of Nanci Griffith, or even Mary-Chapin Carpenter and Rosanne Cash, both of whom pitch in with harmony vocals here. Producer Jerry Douglas, whose dobro and pedal steel are two of the most prominent musical elements, wisely keeps the proceedings from getting too slick. The largely acoustic arrangements, highlighted in spots by Sam Bush's mandolin and Alison Krauss' fiddle, are low-key enough to keep from overshadowing O'Connell's remarkable voice. Her emotional but dignified delivery of such terrific songs as Noel Brazil's "Sunnyshine Day" and Paul Brady's "To Be the One" is what gives BLUE IS THE COLOUR OF HOPE its power. The album's highlight is the soaring centerpiece "I Would Be Stronger Than That," one of those rare country songs that examines the concept of abusive relationships and domestic violence without descending into exploitative mawkishness.
