Up for your consideration, and with FREE shipping insurance, is a Spanish or S. American Fighting knife. It is 13" overall with an 8" blade. The blade has a design on one side and an inscription on the other. It says "La esperanza es lo ultimo que se pierde", which roughly translated means that the last thing you ever lose is hope. Notice the unusual "Spanish Notch" at the base of the blade and the cut marks on the back of the blade. Supposedly the notch was used to catch the opponents blade during a duel and the notches on the back of the blade were supposed to dull your opponents blade. The following is some information I got from an article by Able A. Domenech,  "the widespread custom of decorating them with phrases and mottoes". "the use of "cuts" or file marks on the back of the blade and the presence of some kind of "notch" in the ricasso of the blade. Regarding the use of the file marks on the back of blades of puñales there are several explanations; one such explanation assures that they were used as "cattle counters" (each mark counting as a bead in an "abacus"), another that they served as wire cutters and yet another that they were an edge-destroying device for the opponent's blade edge during a fight". The guard and pommel appear to be aluminum. Notice the blood grooves on either side of the blade. The only sheaths that I have just do not look right with this knife. I know several leather guys that will make whatever kind of sheath you want at a very reasonable price. Let me know if you need this information.
