Movie description
Sarah Miles (Deborah Kerr), the unhappy wife of a meek civil servant (Peter Cushing) falls into a passionate love affair with American expatriate writer William Bendrix (Van Johnson) during the London Blitz. After an air raid interrupts one of their trysts, Sally unexplicably cuts the affair short, and Bendrix never quite gets over it. After the war, he hires a detective (John Mills) to find out what made her change her mind. The startling answer calls the very nature of love--and faith--into question. Director Edward Dmytryk manages to infuse this adaptation of the Graham Greene novel with plenty of spiritual and romantic yearning. Kerr conveys pages of emotion as Sarah, and Mills is a first-rate scene-stealer as the detective hired by Bendrix. It's pretty heart-rending stuff.
