French, these items are known as pins. In English, they are variously
referred to as pins, brooches or badges, depending on whether you speak
British or American English, or one of the many other dialects.
Basically pin refers to the method of attachment, so in that sense this
item is similar to a tie tack. There is a pin that sticks out from the
back of the brooch/badge, hence the analogy between pin and tack. The circular metal clasp has two flaps which, when
squeezed together, allow the clasp to be pushed onto, or pulled off, the
pin. When the flaps, which are spring-loaded, are released the clasp
grips the pin firmly, thus preventing the brooch/badge from falling off
the garment. For example, this item could be
worn as a badge or brooch on the lapel of a jacket or blouse, but could equally
well be worn as a tie pin. Alternatively, it could
be
pinned to a notice board and used for
decoration. Some pins are extremely eye-catching and
when framed like pictures singly, or mounted in a group, they can be
used to make attractive miniature displays to be hung on a wall. Lots
of people collect and trade pins. Pins are often arranged by subject (eg
aircraft, animals, cars, characters, events, motorcycles, trucks, etc).
