THE CARPENTERS: SINGLES 1969 TO 1981 (THE SACD COLLECTION) Universal Music Release as SACD 5.1 / SACD Stereo / CD Stereo SACD Player strongly recommended for optimal listening Brand new and sealed package Just in time for Christmas! Karen and Richard Carpenter were perfectionists in the studio. Given the freedom to experiment with then-new recording techniques, they created some of pop music's most sophisticated audio mixes. After Karen's tragic and untimely death, Richard oversaw numerous reissue projects in which he personally reworked and tweaked the Carpenters' master tapes. Over the years, there were box sets, multiple CD collections, and numerous single CD collections of the Carpenters hits and LP tracks. Although most of their music was recorded in the 70s and early 80s, he was able to coax the smallest nuances and sounds from those recordings. In 2000, Universal released a 20-track compilation, "Carpenters Singles: 1969 - 1981", which contained the usual assortment of Carpenters radio hits and album cuts. However, with the introduction of hybrid multichannel SACDs, Richard saw an opportunity to revisit, re-imagine, and remix classic tracks to a 5.1 sound field. But while Richard had agreed to produce a set of new SACD mixes, he opted for a slightly different line-up of songs than the 2000 release, one which would show-off "The Carpenters Sound" in a rich and layered multichannel mix. The result was a new package of 21 Carpenters tracks, released in 2004 on hybrid SACD only, for Universal Music. If you're a fan of pop music, you ought to get this SACD. For one thing, Universal has pulled its support of the SACD format, so there's no telling how long the SACD disk will be available in the "new and sealed" condition I'm offering on ebay. The CD booklet includes brief notes on each track by Richard Carpenter. He reveals interesting production aspects and shares some anecdotes about the music But of course, the real (only?) reason to buy this if you own an SACD player is the music. The sonics on this SACD are spectacular. Some of these tracks go back to the late 60s and early 70s, yet on an SACD player there's a real sonic "bite" and brilliance I hadn't anticipated -- and the bass lines really come through! The 5.1 multichannel mixes sound like the Carpenters are in the room with you. Considering that some of these tracks are almost 40 years old, there's a depth and richness that the conventional stereo CD mixes cannot deliver. You'll hear Karen's silky voice shimmer over the instrumentations of "Merry Christmas, Darling" and "Close to You". Album tracks like "Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft" will surround you in sound, while hits like "Superstar", "Top Of The World". "Rainy Days and Mondays", and "Yesterday Once More" will open up and sound fuller than you ever imagine. Track after track, you'll hear the snap of the snare drum, the rush of the strings surrounding you, and the rich orchestrations filling your room with music you've heard hundreds of times -- but never quite like this! In my view, the original integrity of the music of Richard and Karen shines through. If you don't own an SACD player, the stereo program will play on any regular CD player. All of the comments about the disk's sonics apply to the stereo version, except (of course) the surround-sound material. But, if you should buy a new SACD-compatible player in the future, you'll have your first demo disk! Here are the 21 tracks, as listed on the SACD: 1. Yesterday Once More 2. We've Only Just Begun 3. Superstar 4. Rainy Days and Mondays 5. Goodbye to Love 6. I Believe You 7. It's Going to Take Some Time 8. This Masquerade 9. Ticket to Ride 10. Top of the World 11. Only Yesterday 12. Hurting Each Other 13. Please Mr. Postman 14. Merry Christmas Darling 15. Sing 16. Bless the Beasts and Children [From Bless the Beasts and Children] 17. I Won't Last a Day Without You 18. Touch Me When We're Dancing 19. For All We Know [From Lovers and Other Strangers] 20. (They Long to Be) Close to You 21.
