The Caroline Years ![]() This auction is for a one of the Little House "prequels" - It's the third book in The Caroline Years, the story of Laura Ingalls mother, "Ma", born and raised in Scotland. It's a wonderful story and I have enjoyed reading all of these books over the past few years. The story is written by Maria D. Wilkes, who like the other authors of the prequels has a way of bringing history to life and helping readers not only understand Laura better but bring that period of history to life. The members of the Quiner family are endearing and this story is a true pioneering as Caroline's widowed mother (Charlotte) sets westward through unsettled forests to make a home for her family in Wisconsin. Like the stories of Laura in the Little House books, we see some of the day to day of what life was like then . The tales are engaging, and it's wonderful to enjoy historical fiction of this type that helps you see where people come from even if some of the details may not be actual fact. Do keep an eye on our auctions as we have many of these Little House books which we will be listing over the coming weeks in hopes of helping folks find them for their kids or themselves. So here are the details. It's 315 pages long, paperback, BRAND NEW - in pristine condition. The actual publisher is Scholastic and the ISBN is 0439103983 but it is in every other way identical to the ISBN listed in the product info below (315 pages...). It's no longer in print so it is rare and hard to find. These books are all now very difficult to find as they are now out of print. About a year ago, the publisher came out with "new editions" of these books, updated and seriously abridged and not at all the same. I believe the new "editions" (versions if you will) are almost 100 pages shorter, cutting out what makes these stories so very wonderful - all the details and stories and anecdotes and the style that makes them really interesting as a parent and even to the children reading them. All the description and study are gone. Thus if you'll read between the lines here, THIS IS THE UNABRIDGED EDITION from 1998 prior to the present day publishers butchery (sorry - I really disapprove of them dumbing down literature to supposedly make things "interesting" to modern day children, as though these weren't interesting or our children can't handle them - and I am letting that opinion show here as a plug for these unabridged copies!). Please read this link if you wish to find out more about the whole abridgement situation from the author of some of the other prequels (including how to tell the difference between abridged and unabridged copies). ![]()
