The Charlotte Years ![]() This auction is for a one of the Little House "prequels" - It's the fourth book in The Charlotte Years, the story of Laura Ingalls maternal grandmother, Charlotte (Caroline, or Ma's mother), born and raised in the Boston area. It's a wonderful story and I have enjoyed reading all of these books over the past few years (though I wish there were more about Charlotte and Martha as well but I guess I have to wait for them to be written!). The story is written by Melissa Wiley, who like the other authors of the prequels has a way of bringing history to life and helping readers not only understand Laura better but bring that period of history to life. The members of the this Scottish family are endearing you really see some of Laura's spunk here (after all it is Lew and Martha - Charlotte's parents - who, once married, left all that was familiar and came to America -the New World to settle! True pioneers, from early on!). The tales are engaging, and it's wonderful to enjoy historical fiction of this type that helps you see where people come from even if much of it may not be entirely true to life. Do keep an eye on our auctions as we have many of these Little House books which we will be listing over the coming weeks in hopes of helping folks find them in hopes of completing sets if possible. These books are all now very difficult to find as they are now out of print. About seven months ago, the publisher came out with "new editions" of these books, updated and seriously abridged and not at all the same. I believe the new "editions" (versions if you will) are almost 100 pages shorter, cutting out what makes these stories so very wonderful - all the details and stories and anecdotes and the style that makes them really interesting as a parent and even to the children reading them. All the description and study are gone. Thus if you'll read between the lines here, THIS IS THE UNABRIDGED EDITION from 2004 prior to the present day publishers butchery (sorry - I really disapprove of them dumbing down literature to supposedly make things "interesting" to modern day children, as though these weren't interesting or our children can't handle them - and I am letting that opinion show here as a plug for these unabridged copies!). Please read this link if you wish to find out more about the whole abridgement situation from the author herself (including how to tell the difference between abridged and unabridged copies). ![]()
