The Small and Powerful World of the Great Washington Law Firms by Joseph C. Goulden New York: Weybright and Talley; copyright 1972, ex-library, and in very good condition
ABOUT THE BOOK: From the book jacket: “The most powerful and least publicized of all the lawyers in America today are those who reside and do business in Washington, D.C. Their fees are frequently enormous. Their daily labors ultimately affect every citizen in this country. Not surprisingly, Washington’s lawyers have long preferred the privacy of paneled offices and governmental cloakrooms to scrutiny by the press and public. Now, in one of the most knowledgeable books of recent years, Joseph C. Goulden takes the reader on an eye-opening tour of eminent lawyers and the influential law firms that practice along the Potomac. His narrative is a blend of investigative reporting and interviews with topflight Washington Lawyers. Some speak with rare on-the-record candor. Others tell startling corporate and governmental tales both sacred and profane. The Superlawyers introduces such blue-chip barristers as Clark Clifford, Abe Fortas, Tommy the Cork Corcoran, and such front-line firms as Covington and Burling, Arnold and Porter, and Wilmer, Cutler and Pickering. There’s a fascinating account of Richard Nixon’s ‘wilderness years at Mudge, Rose, Guthrie and Alexander that also portrays how the firm prospered after the Former Partner moved into the White House. The million-dollar fees, the billion-dollar clients, the interface between big business and even bigger government, the high-level friendships, the elbow-in-the-eye tactics not taught at respectable law schools – all are detailed in this immensely readable book. Washington, to corporate America, spells money and power on a colossal scale. The Superlawyers is an unforgettable view of that restless landscape.” The New York Times: “A gossipy muckraking chronicle. It describes transactions which have enabled lawyers like Clark Clifford to earn $1,000,00 a year , and have procured tax breaks worth hundreds of millions for giant corporations!” Washington Post: “Outrageously readable, titillating, extremely informative..it will drive Washington lawyers up the wall!.” CONDITION: This hardcover, retired library book of 408 pages was copyright 1972 and is in very good condition, its pages clean, bright and tight. Please note: As with most retired library books, the dust jacket is covered by a mylar dust jacket for protection- and that mylar dust jacket was glued to the hardcover; mylar dj shows some typical shelf scuffing; library i.d. remains in and on the book; tear mark on rear endpaper and inside rear cover where library i.d. was removed. None of this detracts from the overall quality and appearance of this fine volume. American law, lawyers, attorneys, legal history.
