Considering Louis Armstrong's illustrious career, which spanned nearly half a century, it seems incredible that many of these chestnuts are cut here under his name for the first time. The producer of these sessions, Norman Granz, called Armstrong's voice more than the sound of jazz, describing it as "the sound of humanity and hope."
Whether blowing his horn in his much imitated, never duplicated, declamatory style, or growling out a ballad with his improbably perfect voice, he gives these classics timeless interpretations. Joining him on several titles for vocal duets is Ella Fitzgerald, someone who shared many of Armstrong's sensibilities, including a keen awareness of jazz's power to entertain--indeed, these two aimed to please. But it is never pandering, as Louis and Ella swing with good humor and a rhythmic sureness that is so right, one risks taking it for granted. Don't miss the fun they have on Cole Porter's "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" and the sultry "Summertime," which features a simple yet beautiful introduction on trumpet. Louis's solo take on the naughty title track at the slowest tempo imaginable rings out the double-entendres for all that they are worth.
