| Synopsis | |
| This volume of photographs from Rolling Stone magazine's archives includes both portraits and candid shots of the most important cultural icons of the last 30 years, some of which have never before been published. Attempting to capture the essence of each performer, the editors have chosen some amazing images, including '60s idols Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, a very young Elvis giving his cousin a haircut, Ice-T wearing a duct-tape gag, Bob Dylan ironing Joan Baez's hair, and hundreds more. Each unforgettable image--from the touching to the hilarious--is presented in a beautiful full-page enlargement followed at the end of the book by the brief commentaries of rock journalist Anthony DeCurtis. The vast array of photographers includes Annie Leibovitz, Jim Marshall, Mark Seliger, Mary Ellen Mark, Herb Ritts, Albert Watson, Dennis Hopper, and Robert Mapplethorpe. | |

| Each of these 177 photographs contains an idea of rock'n'roll. There is the innocence of a wide-eyed Paul McCartney in Germany in 1961 and the spent, tormented Sid Vicious, his chest rent with self-inflicted wounds, sneering on a Dallas stage in 1978. The wild creativity of Frank Zappa is captured, as is the brooding of the artist formerly known as Prince, the unleashed fury of Jerry Lee Lewis, the defiance of Courtney Love, and the in-your-face sexuality of Kiss. The pictures are grouped loosely by theme: concert photos, artists preparing to perform, trappings of celebrity, and the like. Photographers include Robert Mapplethorpe, Annie Leibovitz, Dennis Hopper, and Norman Seeff. Many have appeared in Rolling Stone, but some have never before been published. The pages are free of text, and an excellent index features a miniature of each photo, the artist depicted, photographer, year, location, and a brief description of the circumstances of the shoot. Recommended for music, photography, and popular culture collections in public, and academic libraries. Adam Mazmanian, "Library Journal" Adams | |

| Rolling Stone Images of Rock & Roll By: Rolling Stone Magazine Publishers ISBN-10: 0316754684 ISBN-13: 9780316754682 Publisher: Little, Brown - 1995-11-01 Hardcover | 1st Edition | 256 Pages Product Dimensions: 11.98 x 10.6 x 1.25 inches A gallery of 179 striking photographs, arranged by theme, explores the variety of rock 'n' roll styles over the years and includes images previously published in Rolling Stone and some never published before. 100,000 first printing. BOMC. Elvis, Michael, Patti, Bruce--icons all. The Rolling Stone portraits assembled in this book depict five decades worth of musical sensations and idols. The juxtaposition of the shots heightens the fun of flipping through the photos: A young Mick Jagger sitting under a hairdryer faces Snoop Doggy Dog, his curls caught up in a hairdresser's clips; David Bowie in a loincloth counterbalances Björk in a fig leaf; Chris Isaak and John Lee Hooker stand opposite one another, each in a polka-dot shirt; Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley, side by side and enveloped in clouds of smoke. These alignments of musicians from different eras and different genres make a simple, visual statement about the transcendent power of music. Every page reveals another familiar image that transports the readers to the moment they first saw the musicians on the cover of the magazine or heard their music. The undiscovered pictures are a treat as well. Individually, these portraits expose the essence of their subjects and speak volumes about the characters that created and sustain rock and roll. Pages, cover and jacket are like new and free of any marks, stains, tears or creasing. I strive for honest shipping charges and no handling fee. I weigh each item prior to sale and figure in approximate container weight. Usually spot on, occasionally a few ounces off - or perhaps a pound in the case of larger items. It seems to work out even as sometimes I have to pay the difference to keep this promise. I'm usually open to alternative shipping methods as opposed to those offered by eBay's ad format. Let me know if this works better for you. Where a more premium shipping class is the same or less than that selected by the buyer, I will usually upgrade to the more premium shipping method - unless the buyer requests otherwise. Many times Priority is less expensive than Parcel Post - go figure. Ship time is usually same business day or next business day after payment is received for an item. I will notify a buyer if it may take longer. For combined shipping all selected items are weighed in their secure shipping container. You will then be invoiced for that amount of shipping. You can let me know ahead of time if you wish to select several items so I don't invoice you early. If you do this, don't pay until after I've sent you the invoice. Unless specified, all books and other items are completely free of tobacco smoke smell or residue. I do not ship to Puerto Rico. The Post Office's estimates of delivery times bear no resemblance to reality and until they do reflect reality, I am not going to take the rap for the much longer delivery time than that "promised" by the USPS. If you bid or pay with a Puerto Rico shipping address, your money will be speedily refunded and the item relisted. Refunds will be issued up to 7 days from delivery of item according to tracking info. If a refund is desired, please inform me before 7 days from delivery and you will have ample time to return the item for refund. |
