• • This is a rare illustration of Leslie Howard done around 1927 — 1928 by Alex Gard in New York City. At the time this black and white sketch was created backstage, the actor was preparing for a performance of the Broadway play "Escape" at the Booth Theatre; this drama was onstage from October 1927 — March 1928. • • Born in London, England, Leslie Howard [3 April 1893 — 1 June 1943] was a British stage and film actor, director, dramatist, and producer. One of his best-known roles was as Ashley Wilkes in Gone with the Wind (1939) along with his roles in Berkeley Square (1933), Of Human Bondage (1934), The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934), The Petrified Forest (1936), Pygmalion (1938) and Intermezzo (1939). Leslie Howard died in 1943 when he was flying to Bristol, U.K., from Lisbon, Portugal, on KLM Royal Dutch Airlines/ BOAC Flight 777. The aircraft [a Douglas DC-3] was shot down by a Nazi German Junkers Ju 88 aircraft over the Bay of Biscay.

Alex Gard contributed weekly drawings to the drama section of The New York Herald Tribune. In the 1920s, Gard was hired to create caricatures of Broadway notables and other celebrities for Sardi's Restaurant in the Times Square area of New York City.
