1758 BRITISH ENGRAVED POWDER HORN, NEW YORK MAP

Presenting this magnificent 1758 British powder horn with an engraved map of New York. The side is inscribed that it was made in 1758 by William Dawson. Dawson was in the Inneskilling 27th Regiment and this map shows the forts, cities and waterways complete with buildings, ships, points of compass and the Royal Coat of Arms. In my research, I discovered that the 27th Reg was specifically in the Battle of Ticonderoga in 1758 among many of the other battles in the region.

The engraved powder horn was a highly fashionable and sophisticated personal item, sometimes a soldier's most cherished possession.This type of map horn helped the soldier to keep track of his location to forts, lakes, and towns.

The horn has a wonderful aged patina. The plug and the throat are made of different woods. The throat is octagonal and leads to three sections that have enough recess in between for a strap to be secured. The domed hardwood plug is attached with ten tiny metal pins or nails and there is one hole through the plug where a strap would have been secured with a nail. The horn body has one 2" split from the nail up (see pictures). No worm holes or other issues.
