COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD

Edited by J A Hammerton (1871-1949), who is described by the Dictionary of National Biography as "the most successful creator of large-scale works of reference that Britain has known".

From 1914 to 1919, Hammerton was joint editor with H.W. Wilson of the periodical "The Great War:The Standard History of the All-Europe Conflict", published by the Amalgamated Press. The first volume was largely concerned with justifying Britain's entry into the war, and with encouraging the British people to sign up and fight.

His greatest achievement was Harmsworth's Universal Encyclopædia, which – like the Children's Encyclopædia – was published first as a fortnightly series in 1920–22 and sold twelve million copies throughout the English-speaking world.

Subsequently he edited numerous literary works. Among the publications in his own name, one can mention a biography of J.M. Barrie and studies of Charles Dickens and Robert Louis Stevenson. He also wrote an autobiography, Books and Myself (1944).

Overall, these volumes are in excellent used condition, with no visible tears or marks. There are minor denting marks on the top right hand corner of each front cover, though barely noticeable. I've looked for foxing marks, without any success. The Leather on the binding is in remarkably good condition, with only minor wear on the top and bottom. The lettering and design in gold is unblemished.

I have attached a selection of photographs, showing covers, title page, contributors and various pages. There is an interesting 'fold-out' map of the world at the end of the final volume (see photo 10).
