You are bidding on an original acrylic painting by artist/game developer Paul Jaquays. The painting was painted as a freelance commission for the magazine in 1989. It is a part of gaming history and representational of the artist's cover paintings from the time.
Media: Acrylic paint on cold press Bristol paper (acid free) mounted to 1/8th thick particle board with white glue. Airbrush was used in the creation of the work, but strictly speaking, it is not an airbrush painting and is primarily rendered using traditional brushwork. The artist has made a point of using non-volatile pigments in his acrylic illustrations, meaning that the art should not fade if reasonable precautions are made when it is displayed.
Condition: Artwork is in excellent condition. For a good share of its life it was matted, framed and under glass. It has been displayed at numerous game conventions and on the walls of the artist's own home. Mat, frame, and glass are long gone. Artwork is sold in "as is" condition.
Provenance: Each piece of original art is accompanied by a provenance sheet that includes details from this auction and the artist's signature.
Artist's Comments: The title character of this piece, the warrior Cryson, was the avatar (player controlled character) of one of my college buddies back in the day when playing Dungeons & Dragons was how I spent large amounts of my free time. Cryson was the type of character who would disappear from the ranks of his comrades and seek out the best treasure to be found while they did the risky things that actually deserved reward. This scenario never happened to Cryson. But back in the day, it would have been his just desserts for his selfishness. The painting was created during a transitional period in my work. Most of my paintings up until this time were this size or smaller. With later paintings, I drastically increased the "real estate" covered by paint. It's also one of the few fantasy paintings that I have done where there is an implicit "moral of the story" built into the tale the painting tells. âBe loyal. Stay together. Share the danger and reward.â
About the Artist: Paul Jaquays was a regular art contributor to both Dungeon and Dragon magazines in the late 80s and early 90s (he was also a contributor to Dragon magazine number 1). Depending on whom you ask; Jaquays is either a fantasy and science fiction illustrator, a game adventure designer, or a video and computer game developer. He has done all that and more in a career that spans more than 30 years. Jaquays recently completed work as an artist on Halo Wars for the Xbox 360 from Ensemble Studios and Microsoft, and currently works as a designer for CCP North America.
Special Note About Shipping: I will build a custom shipping container for this piece. My custom containers are both strong and light weight, but require custom materials which are figured into the handling fees ... and take extra time to make ... hence the extra handling time. The 10 pound weight is an estimate only. I will refund shipping costs in excess of actual shipping and handling.
