ATQ. R&J CLEWS DECORATIVE PLATE c 1818-34 MORALE MAXIMS

VERY OLD AND RARE!!!!  NOT THAT MANY LEFT!!!!

FIRST QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY

            When Baileys Directory was issued in 1784 ,  there were 7 potteries occupied in Cobridge  c1818-1834. One of them was Ralph &James Clews, the famous manufacturer of earthenware. The firm later became bankrupt in 1835 and closed its doors.

The plate that you are looking at was made around that time. Its very old and in good condition. From the front it shows no chips cracks or color loss. The back has 6 hair line stress cracks that are barely able to be felt when you rub your finger nail across them and a thin dime size chip that does not go through and can not be seen on the front. There is some staining on the back also. 

Marked with J&R Clews mark, title and impressed 5 on the back of the plate. . Size : 10.5 " in diameter

The title of this wonderful plate is

MORALE MAXIMS

("maxims" which are wise saving )

as you can see from the pictures there are three sections titled

Industry

Knowledge

Temperance

with pictures under the title depicting each title.

Around the scalloped rim of the plate runs a ribbon with nine saying having to due with each title.
