The big news on Al Green's first proper album of the 21st century is that he finally reunited with producer/arranger Willie Mitchell, the man behind Green's classic '70s albums. Accordingly, Mitchell brought in some of the key musicians from those albums, such as "Teenie" and Leroy Hodges (guitar and bass, respectively), Memphis Horns saxman Andrew Love, and the distinctive vocal trio Rhodes, Chalmers, and Rhodes. Together with Green, they conspire to create a welcome return to the glory days of Memphis soul, full of fire and elegant arrangements in equal measure. As the horns blast out and Green wails, moans, and croons like a man half of his 57 years, the recording missteps of the previous decade seem to vanish into thin air. It seems that Green intends the title of this undeniable comeback album to be quite literal, and we should all be grateful for that.

One review reads '`I Can't Stop' is a surprisingly great comeback album by Al Green. I still can't get over the thrill of having Al back in the game and making music like he did in the old days. Al has stayed true to himself & legitimate R&B. He's not trying to sell out or appeal to a pop audience, instead he hooks back up with his old producer Willie Mitchell, dusts off his old session players and cut this album in the exact same studio he recorded classics like `Al Green Gets Next To You' and `Lets Stay Together' back in the day.

This is a real cool set, The songs ride those great old gritty-sounding grooves layered with real instruments (rare these days), and Al's vocals have aged like fine wine, he can still get down & dirty on the mic but also varies up his gruff yet smooth style. The title track is The Jam! One of Al's finest cuts ever, I've been spinning that one ever since I copped the album. All the material is fresh and salutes the ole school pioneers, if you are tired of contemporary R&B then check out `I Can't Stop' to hear how a Master does things. Al Green its great to have you back, don't ever go away like that again! '
