Samuel Butnik studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art. He traveled widely, and lived and worked in Taos, New York, Providence, and also in France, Greece, Spain and England. His work in the 1950s was in a more painterly abstract style, but by the late 1960s he was working exclusively in a "hard-edge" style.
