In the last 5 years, Rocky has begun manufacturing clothing in a big way. Clothing has been a highly successful addition to the Rocky product line. There's a military-inspired product available this year, too — the Rocky S2V apparel line.

It includes a full zip jacket ($169.99 MSRP), a hooded parka ($179.99), cargo pant ($169.99), cap ($19.99) and gloves ($29.99).

"The design of each garment allows for full range of motion at the shoulders, elbows, hips and knees without riding up," Rutter said. "But they aren't bulky or baggy. The textile is a four-way stretch polyester, so you've got comfort and mobility. The lining construction is sculpted fleece that wicks persperation away."

It is water-repellant, but not waterproof.

"There's no membrane in the garment," Rutter said. "Membranes make garments waterproof. In rain tests, eventually it leaked in the shoulder seams after a couple of hours in the rain. It's not waterproof, but it's incredibly breathable. There's enough density that it actually gives a windbreak. It's not as good as actually having a membrane windbreak.

"It's highly water-repellant, virtually waterproof. But it has maximum breathability, so you're dry all the time. Put on a base layer that wicks, it takes the moisture into this garment and you are always dry. That's what it's all about."

Ruttig promptly opened a water bottle and poured it on the jacket, watching as a large single bead rolled off the material like mercury on a chemistry lab table.

For guys who sweat (and who amongst us doesn't?) that lack of a "membrane" is important. Total waterproofing is an easy tradeoff on most days, when the moisture soaking you is self-produced.

"It's almost impossible for moisture to move through a membrane as fast as you can produce it," Rutter said. "You will perspire faster than a membrane will let it go through.

"These garments are just loaded for guys that are on the move. There are lots of pockets, and the pockets have magnets on them that are silent."
