By the mid-'70s Al Green's string of Willie Mitchell-produced hits for the Hi label had ended. The singer went through a life-changing experience that resulted in his redirecting his energies into the ministry. Deciding that he could work in the both the religious and secular worlds, he re-emerged on the A&M label. While his arrangements had some contemporary touches and his new focus was on gospel, his sound was still very rooted in his characteristic Memphis soul. And that voice! There were hits as well as gems on his A&M releases, and they're all well represented here. Even the marketplace dictates that had him record a duet with Annie Lennox ("Put A Little Love In your Heart") came up with magic--in lesser hands that's the sort of thing that often results in commercial dross. Re-teaming with Willie Mitchell for the HE IS THE LIGHT album brought forth such wonderful songs as "You Brought the Sunshine" and "I Feel Like Going On."
