Up for bids is this beautiful red leather Book of Common Prayer printed in London in 1794 by Millar Ritchie for J. Good, Bond Street and E. Harding, Pall Mall. It is in amazingly good condition considering it is over 200 years old! The fine red leather shows only small signs of wear and still has most of the gold line decoration. The gilding on the edges of the pages is still intact and bright. There are 12 engraved illustrations, all beautifully done. There is some foxing in the book, and most of it has occured on these engraved plates. I suspect it is a result of the tissue leaves that were bound in to protect the engravings, but I don't know that for sure. There is some foxing to some of the text pages, but most of it is on the plates. The book measures 6 3/4" by 10 1/4" by 2 3/8" thick. There are 753 pages. There is quite an old looking price tag inside the back from The May Co. for 20.00 AS IS(I assume this was because of the foxing). I would guess the price tag is at least 60 years old by the looks of it. There is one small gouge to the bottom page edges which has taken the gilding off for about 1/2", I have pictured this spot. Also the corners of the book curl in somewhat, more on the bottom edge than the top. There is wear to the leather along both sides of the spine where the red is worn off. I am not a book dealer, so if you have questions please put them in layman's terms or I won't understand what you are asking. Thanks for viewing and please bid!! |
