On offer is a rare oppourtunity to purchase the first impression of the first edition of The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien, published on the 29th July 1954.

This copy has been well preserved considering its age and is in at least Very Good condition. In original cloth, 8vo, with bright gilt lettering on the spine, the binding and page block tight. The bottom and top edging of the boards show only light signs of wear and the corners are only lightly bumped. The map tipped in to the rear is in near fine condition. The red staining to the top of the page block is faded and the book is inscribed neatly to a previous owner.  The correct issue dust jacket (DJ) is present and is in Very Good condition. The DJ is price clipped to the front but not the rear and has light tape burns, as do the free endpapers. The edging of the DJ is better than average although there has been the usual light tearing and wear at the spine.

For the 86 pages of proofreader's queries sent by George Allen and Unwin to Tolkien on the 27th January 1954 Tolkien was deeply grateful. On the pages themselves and again in a letter to George Allen and Unwin "He will express deep gratitude to the proofreader for his queries, even those that were not accepted, because they reflect careful attention paid to the work."

This copy has been extensively photographed with high definition enlargeable images being readily available. You may also view the book at my home in London. The potential purchaser should check the images thoroughly prior to purchase seeing as I will not accept that a dispute claiming the item is not as described is genuine.

Having said this I firmly believe that an item should be able to be returned regardless of circumstances and offer a 7 day refund period after receipt. This does not cover the cost of postage or any other fees or charges that may be incurred as a result of incorrectly sending the item. Returns over £100 MUST be insured and sent via a trackable method by the returner.

If, however, a book is returned in a different state than when sent then I will only refund a part of the whole value. The amount refunded will be proportional to the reduction in value any damage has caused.
