This rare and lavishly illustrated collection of poems, essays and recollections about Dickens defies classification. It was published by Hodder and Stoughton for "The Bookman" in 1914. In sum it is a hommage to Dickens which include contributions by Swinburne (including a poem to Dickens), Chesterton, Afred Noyes, William de Morgan and George Bernard Shaw ( the latter two declaring their debt to Dickens, and Shaw even admitting to have used some of Dickens characters in his plays). There is a section on personal recollections and opinions of the man and his works. The illustrations alone are stunning in their scope. Some of the list of illustrations is photographed above. They are copious and include copies of sketches of his characters, photgraphs and drawings of the man, his homes and other buildings important to him. The illustrations include a drawing of Dickens reading "The Chimes" to his friends at 58 Lincoln's Inn Fields in 1844. As you can see from the photographs, this book has a soft, cloth cover which is coming loose on the spine. The first few pages are loose but everything after the frontispiece is well anchored. There is some foxing to the most-viewed pages of the book, but much of it is umarked, and it is a great pleasure to read and to possess. The illustrations are for the most part in pristine condition, being printed on different paper. This book is large -21 by 29 centimetres- and heavy, perhaps around 500 grammes ( I am not able to weigh it). Therefore I recommend sea mail for international postage from Australia. If you want airmail postage please contact me. Postage to USA is free because the rules only allow a $4 charge anyway. |
