      Shelia's 28 South Battery

    Charleston, SC

This is a charming  historical collectible by Shelia. Shelia's collectibles are made in Charleston, SC and feature historic American homes and landmarks.  These miniatures capture the architectural details of the properties and each piece has a "key" hidden in the design.

Printed on the back of this house:

SHELIA'S 28 SOUTH BATTERY, CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

The architecture of 28 South Battery blends the Italianate and Gothic Revival, a trend that was common during the final years of the antebellum period.  George S. Cook, a noted Charleston photographer, purchased the site in 1860.  The original homes in that area were believed to have been in a state of ruin at that time and Cook therefore replaced the original wooden structure with his 3 1/2 story brick home in 1861.  The house was later purchased and restored to it's former grandeur in the 1970's.  This name,"The  Battery," pays homage to the fortifications placed along the shore on the south and east sides of the city from the earliest times.  The spot was orginally called the, "White Point Garden," for the great amount of bleached oysters shells that washed ashore before the construction of the sea wall.   Shelia 1996
