Liquori, Marty # 205 On the Run : In Search of the Perfect Race Author: Marty Liquori and Skip Myslenski Publisher: 1979 William Morrow and Company, Inc. - New York - pp. 288 Biography of the third high school runner in history to break the 4:00 mile barrier, (1st Jim Ryun in 1965 and 2nd Tim Danielson in 1966) running 3:59.8 in 1967. Liquori’s career as an American distance runner had many ups and downs. The downs were injuries that keep him from fulfilling his own personal goals that were so high that he comes off a little hard on himself in the book for not accomplishing them, but to his fans he succeeded far more in our eyes that he did in his own. “I knew some people might think I was giving up, but I wasn’t looking at it that way. I couldn’t sit and cry over spilled milk and say I was robbed by injury the last time, then again go after the gold metal in the 1,500. That wouldn’t have been smart. In my mind, all the evidence pointed to my moving up, all logic said that conquering a new event was a greater accomplishment that reclaiming an old position. I knew I had been the best in the 1,500 at one time, when I was twenty-two, twenty-three, during the runner’s peak years for that race. To climb a new mountain, to prove that I could be the best at yet another distance, that loomed as a very real and a very alluring challenge to me.” The ups included being the top rated miler in the world in 1969 and 1971. Being the American record holder during his era of the 2,000 meter run and two mile run. Plus many N.C.C.A. titles and many thrilling victories over some the best runners ever in the sport, like his victory over Jim Ryun in 1971 in which Liquori wrote “If you \ could capture the emotion of that moment and bottle it and hand it to a young runner, he would spend the next ten years of his life striving for a similar achievement.” Liquori later went on to be a commentator of track and field events around the world. Interesting read of classic mile races and racers of the late sixties and early seventies spiced with opinionated comments and keen observations.
