"Until his marriage in 1863, no one was closer to Custer than his elder sister Lydia, who was often a surrogate mother as well as sister. Custer treated her with total openness as he did no person, and her advice given with love was ever followed by the youngster into early manhood. It was she who made Custer give up drinking early in life –a pledge he kept until his death in an army noted for obsessive drinking. Author Alice T. O’Neil has taken all known letters from the West Point Archives and private collections to relate the real Custer- at times upon his entrance to West Point at only 17 to his command of the Third Cavalry Division – the best in the Union Army while only 23. This is the saga of the young student and his time, events and friendships at the Academy with many fellow classmates he would soon meet and defeat in battle. His letters show a remarkable insight and intelligence for one so young. When most were predicting a short war with few losses, Custer was relating to Lydia why it would be a long war with previously unheard of killing. His writing of the war puts a “human” face to the events such as crossing enemy lines to visit former classmates now fighting for the South, and even being the best man at the wedding of a Confederate officer. There is much of the family members themselves and his ever beloved mother.
A great first person look at the war not found elsewhere This is both a revealing and entertaining journey into our past full of great history ,lives, and the times the nation found itself in.
