A
GREAT WAY TO LEARN WHAT IT TAKES TO BUILD A SOLAR PANEL WITHOUT A
LARGE INVESTMENT IN TIME OR MONEY.
This
kit is perfect for the curious about solar, a novice who wants to
start building his/her own solar panels, students for science fairs,
teachers of science courses, boy scout projects etc
This kit will keep you from making
mistakes, it will keep you on the right track, If at any time you do
not understand something you will have my e-mail address for free
on-line help.
I want
you to have fun building this panel and give you the confidence to
take on larger solar panel projects.
WHEN
COMPLETE YOU WILL HAVE AN 18 WATT PANEL YOU CAN BE PROUD OF
36 x.5v =18v
18v
x 1000miliamps=18 watts
THIS
KIT IS LIKE INTRO TO SOLAR 101
LET
ME TELL YOU WHAT YOU GET AND WHY:
40 2" x 2" real solar cells each one is rated at .5 volts x 1000 milliamp:
These
cell are easy to work with they are 2" square cells and because
they are square they have more inherent strength than rectangular
cells and for their size they are very powerful. I will give
you 40 cells in case you rough up a few.
I put 40 cells in my DIY KIT so I know you will have 36 good ones when you are done.
14 feet of tabbing
wire:
tabbing wire is
the flat skinny wire used professionally to connect cells together.
You need 4" for each cell
6" of bus wire:
Bus wire is the wider thicker wire used as
a common connection point for multiple connections. You will solder
3" on the (+) positive end and 3" on the (-) negative end
of your string of cells.
2 feet of 18 gauge black and red
wire:
This is the
wire you will solder one end to the bus wire and the other end you
will connect to your 12 volt battery or other device. Eventually it
will be run through the frame you are going to build. (all explained
in the instructions)
one (1) blocking diode: 3 amp/600
watt
A blocking diode
is a semiconductor device used to stop the flow of current from one
direction, but allow it in the opposite direction. In lay mans terms
it is a one way street for electricity, You attach the diode to the
(+) lead and when the panel is making electricity it will flow into
your battery for example but when the sun went down or
behind
a cloud the
battery would try to flow backwards into the panel, this could
cause two things to happen the battery you just charged would
discharge or the electricity from the battery could damage the cells,
the diode will not let the electricity flow backwards.
spacers
to keep the frame from crushing the cells

INSTRUCTIONS; INSTRUCTIONS; YOU WILL GET
* How to solder tabbing wire on your cells ( 3 pages
)
* How to connect
tabbed cells together ( 6 pages)
* How to connect your bus wire and 18 gauge wire ( 2
pages )
* How to
make a frame and attach the waterproof junction box ( 2 pages )

MORE - MORE -MORE:
* My e-mail address to ask any
questions
* A list of
tools and supplies you should have on hand before you start
* A list of u-tube videos you should
definitely watch before you start (they will help so much)
* A list of places you can buy solar
supplies for future projects
* A web site I found that has a wealth of
information FREE. all kinds of tech stuff , also a list of terms and
definitions some of which I looked up and used in this add, info
about solar panels, charge controllers, storage batteries sizing a
system, battery wiring diagrams and more all FREE.
* The name of a great magazine that has so
much information in it all geared for the home owner
WHAT THIS
KIT DOES NOT CONTAIN THAT YOU WILL NEED SOME BEFORE YOU START SOME WHEN YOU ARE NEAR THE END OF THE PROJECT:
BEFORE YOU START
* You will need a soldering iron either the gun style or the stick
kind. I sell them in my store HEARTOFTHESUN-SOLAR
*
A roll of thin .032 dia. 60/40 rosin core solder (radio
shack) or in my store
NEAR THE END
* A tube of
silicone (clear) (home depot/hardware store)
* A sheet of window glass use a piece 24" x 12"
I don't know if home depot will cut glass to a custom size or not but
most small hardware stores will
* A sheet of cheep plastic also 24” x 12” the kind you would use
to replace a glass panel. Home depot sells 3 different quality's you
need the least expensive one it is the back of your panel, you might
have to buy a piece larger than you need and cut it down to
size.
* A cheep volt
meter (radio shack) also in my store
*
If you intend to charge a deep-cycle battery you will need a small
charge controller, this will act like the diode and it will also give
the battery the electricity the way the battery wants it( more about
this at that web site I told you was full of info FREE
I’ll
tell you where you can buy them and how much they cost.
*
A plastic waterproof junction box (Home depot/ Radio shack may sell
them ) also in my store
*
A 8’ x 3/8 piece of c-channel ( home depot )
AFTER
COMPLETING ONE OF MY KITS YOU SHOULD HAVE THE CONFIDENCE AND
KNOWLEDGE TO BUY ANY CELL ON THE MARKET, EVEN THE MORE EXPENSIVE MORE
FRAGILE CELLS AND BUILD MUCH LARGER MORE POWERFUL PANELS.
EVERY
BIT OF GREEN RENEWABLE ENERGY WE ALL USE WILL HELP. YOU JUST HAVE TO
HAVE THE MINDSET NOT ALL OF US HAVE IN THIS TURN A KEY AND START IT
UP SOCIETY WE LIVE IN.
also check out TBOONEPICKENS.COM THE
PICKENS PLAN and WECANSOLVEIT.COM these are solid ideas that
will help get us off oil. It must be done, we must get off
oil
I reuse anything I can to ship, I buy bio-degradable packing peanuts, but sometimes I re-use oil based packing peanuts that are sent to me.
The assorted papers that are in the kit are 100 % recycled paper, just like the peanuts it is more expensive to buy but environment is worth it.
some of the cells in the kit will have small chips on the edges they are cut from larger cells and it is just part of the process.
