Robinella & the CC String Band's self-titled first outing on Columbia travels with a grace and quiet confidence that parallels that of Alison Krauss & Union Station. Led by Robinella Contreras' effortless vocals, the band runs through some cleverly constructed tunes, like the lovely yet dark opener "Man Over" and the fluid "Mornin' Dove," both penned by Contreras, as well as a really nice reading of the Duke Ellington classic "Solitude." Electric guitarist Steve Kovalcheck and fiddler Billy Contreras' fantastic musical interplay is immediately apparent, arranged wonderfully, and threaded through the entirety of the album's lovely and comfortable Sunday afternoon feel alongside Cruz Contreras' superb mandolin and the pulsating time-clock of Taylor Coker's double bass. The group seamlessly references the languages of jazz, blues, pop, and bluegrass with a rare and impressive musicianship that comes across as a band having a great time playing together, which, of course, makes Robinella & the CC String Band a fun album to listen to. ~ Gregory McIntosh

One review reads 'The CC Stringband name is entirely accurate -- this band, aside from Robinella's expressive vocals -- is all strings and almost all acoustic. But out of those strings, two guitars, mandolin, fiddle and bass, and her voice comes some impressive musical diversity. They dish up old time Opry-like rousers, Tennessee Saturday Night; a sweet life story country ballad of love and flannel pajamas, Dress Me Up, Dress Me Down; the always welcome Cajun black magic of Marie Laveaux; mountain gospel, Hold to God's Unchanging Hand; and -- the big surprise -- some jazz blues, the original Honey, Honey Bee and Duke Ellington's Solitude. As the CD booklet photo of Robinella grasping an old-style stand-up stage microphone suggests, this is a CD out of time that makes its own time. And every time I play it a different song jumps out at me, Mistakes is a current favorite, but eventually everything on Robinella and the CC Stringband will command your attention.'.
