On HOW LUCKY I AM, Bryan White tapped Dan Huff, the producer who engineered Faith Hill's pop crossover success on FAITH, to work the same magic for him. The result is an album with country themes, but very little country instrumentation--a framework that actually fits White's high, yearning, twang-free voice very well. All of the songs are about love, and White, who was 25 and newly-engaged when he recorded the CD, sounds every inch the young man who's head over heels. Ballads like "God Gave Me You," "Two in a Million," "That Good," and "Heaven Sent" find White swooning and sighing over his dream girl, while the excellent "The Stayin'" offers advice to lovers who are about to embark on a life together.
White sounds like he's having the most fun when he toughens up and gets soulful on the groovin' "Love Me Like You Mean It" and the full-tilt rock of "Shari Ann." A standout is the sparkling title track, whose beautifully descriptive lyrics evoke the sheer joy of finding that special someone. Bryan White's fans will enjoy hearing the sound of their hero so engrossed by love.
